Review of Peeples (2013) by Kj H — 10 May 2013
Tonight I went to see "Peeples". Yes, the plot is predictable because it's in the romantic-comedy-class conflict genre. But the performances are wonderful; the actors are so committed to what they're doing that it rises above the genre and turns into a true story.
Craig Robinson carefully swings between working class nobody and whip smart street guy. Kerry Washington is a lovely little rich girl conflicted about her life and S. Epatha Merkerson gives a convincing performance as poor girl who made it but not necessarily for the better.
I realized after the fact that what I loved the most was seeing these highly skilled African-American actors breathing a new life into these traditional tropes. As I left the theater a couple of young women asked me: "Did you just see Peeples?" "Yes", I replied.
"Oh, we enjoyed your laughter." I guess I was really having a good time. I thought from the sound of things everyone did.
