Review of Peeping Tom (1960) by Ahmed K — 01 Jun 2007
Michael Powell's "Peeping Tom" (not Hitchcock) was released in 1959 (not 1999, which is the Criterion DVD release date).
The scathing reviews of "Peeping Tom" upon its initial release and the shock and refusal to sympathize with its menacing central character of Mark Lewis, portrayed by Carl Boehm, the timid photographer who by day works for an adult publications news stand, and by night returns to the darkness of his developing room, is crucial to the understanding of Powell?s film. Due to the genius of Michael Powell?s direction and the script by Leo Marks, the film is a much deeper look at the nature of voyeurism, which is ultimately the basis for the urge to gaze, whether it is film or anything else.
