Review of Peeping Tom (1960) by Devin R — 07 Jul 2009
While very tame by today's standards, "Peeping Tom" was immensely controversial and widely hated upon its release in 1960. It was ahead of its time in every sense of the term. Powell truly gambled his career on this film, and he deserves much respect for that.
He also deserves much respect for making a solid movie. It established innovative POV shots, a unique theme, and featured intriguing performances. The script it subtle and the suspense creeps. It holds up very well, 49 years later. A classic thriller worth everybody's time, especially film students wishing to see true innovation at work in a time full of studio censorship and an oppressive society.
Just as the main character holds mirrors up to his victims so they can see their dying expressions of terror, Powell holds a mirror up to the audience so we can see our inner voyeurs.
