Review of Peep World (2010) by Shelli S — 24 Mar 2011
A "Royal Tenenbaums"- "Arrested Development" wanna-be.
With a stellar cast, this film starts with a great premise: following 18 hours in the life of a dysfunctional family gathering for the 70th birthday of the overbearing dad, played impeccably by Ron Rifkin. The family is torn apart by a book written by the youngest son- a fictionalized account of the family.
Sarah Silverman is so distraught over the book, she's planning to sue her kid brother. To add insult to injury, the movie version is being filmed right outside her apartment with her dad's girlfriend playing her! Also starring Michael C. Hall, Rainn Wilson, a very much wasted Lesley Ann Warren and Taraji P. Henson, this film could have used more character development and fewer erection jokes.
It feels like writer Peter Himmelstein and director Barry W. Blaustein were shooting for "Royal Tenenbauams" coolness, but this one lacks both irony and absurdity. Plus it doesn't measure up to the sharpness of "Arrested Development". It would be more effective as a play.
