Review of Pee-wee's Big Holiday (2016) by Dan H — 20 Mar 2016

A delightfully bizarre, absurd, fast-paced and madcap adventure into the warped mind of Paul Reubens. Joe Manganiello co-stars as himself. Pee-Wee leaves his hometown for the first time when his new best friend Joe invites him to his birthday party at his swanky pad in NYC.

So begins a crazy cross country road trip. The puzzling choice to make it so that Herman has never left his hometown aside (didn't he do exactly that in his first big adventure?), this is actually a very fun film.

The absurdist elements are constant and they hit hard, with most of them working exceptionally well (except for an extended balloon joke). Reubens fits easily back into the shoes of his beloved character with ease (he's 62, but really doesn't look it), and Manganiello makes for a great co-star.

I'm surprised with how much I genuinely enjoyed this crazy film. Hopefully we get more Pee-Wee films like this. Pee-Wee has found a fine home indeed at Netflix, may he never leave again.
