Review of Pearl Jam Twenty (2011) by Max K — 13 Dec 2011
If you were around for the explosion of the Seattle scene as I was, you have some vivid memories of Pearl Jam. I know I have many. Unfortunately, the band get a bit shy when it comes to strolling down memory lane. That's a shame considering this band's true strength is their longevity. Especially when compared to Nirvana and Soundgarden - two bands that are far more talented and deserving of documentaries, in my humble opinion.
In any case, there are three major turning points for this band, and they were either skimmed over or not mentioned at all.: 1. The firing of drummer Dave Abbruzzese; 2. The damaging Rolling Stone article entitled "The Invention of Eddie Vedder," and; 3. the Roskilde tragedy in which nine of their fans were killed during their performance.
"Pearl Jam Twenty" had the potential to justify why we should still care about Pearl Jam after all this time. But in the end, it just came off as fodder for the fan clubs.
