Review of Pearl Jam Twenty (2011) by Reid V — 16 Nov 2011
While seeing footage from the early Seattle grunge scene as well as famous landmarks around town was certainly amusing, this film as a documentary never rises to the promise the work could have been. Director Cameron Crowe seems more interested in being a fanboy than making a good movie.
Fans of Pearl Jam will probably enjoy this and feel a sense of nostaglia about their career. I'm only a mild fan and this didn't captivate me all that much. The issue the movie brings up about Pearl Jam wrestling with their fame also seems somewhat bogus.
They are one of the biggest rock bands from the 90s, have a made a ton of money, sold millions of records, and built a loyal fan base. Then they pretend like they are rebels and renounce these things while at the same time embracing them.
There is a certain absurdity to this.
