Review of Pearl Harbor (2001) by Kevin G — 20 Jan 2012
Just a terribly corny movie that needed to be a lot shorter. Or just fix it so that the romance is not quite as gag-inducing. It seems now like Michael Bay was really trying hard to replicate the success and popularity of "Titanic." And, although the action set piece of the attack is great, he missed the mark. By a wide margin both financially and critically.
He would have been better off just making it strictly about the attack and the explosions. If Michael Bay is good at one thing, it is blowing things up. He is not as successful at creating compelling romance. It seems like in everyone of his movies, people love the action, but hate the drama. In reality, this film does feel like a soap opera with action. And that is its greatest downfall.
