Review of Peacock (2005) by Brody M — 25 Apr 2010
What a strange little movie. Excellent cast/straight to video. Is it a thriller? A drama? A cult oddity? It seems to aspire to all of these. Is it any good? ... not really. As we find out in the opening scenes, Cillian Murphy's character has a split personality that he keeps hidden from the town.
His work as the male personality, John, is kind of Jimmy Stewart/Slingblade, and doesn't work at all, although I get the idea they were going for. Susan Sarandon, who plays the most normal person in the town of Peacock, makes him look like a limp dishrag of a girlyman when he is the female personality, Emma.
Naturally, one personality is good, one is bad. But which is which? And does the actor agree with the intention of the script? I don't think he does. All in all, it's too sympathetic to be creepy or disturbing, and too by the numbers to achieve any quirky fascination.
An interesting miss.
