Review of Peacock (2005) by Carlos Alberto S — 27 Jun 2011
Cillian Murphy, DIDNT even see that it was him in this film, major personality switch to play this film, he did a GREAT job, I felt his anxiety throughout switching his characters, having "EMMA" as his alter personality, I watched the making of the film,John suffers from diassociative personality disorder.
Its from a long line of child abuse starting at a very young age, and they gove you a slight hint of it the beginning of the film, and later its very CLEAR, how traumatic its left him, even more devastating his mother has ben dead for a year, and he doesnt seem to know how to HANDLE the outside world whatsoever.
"John (Cillian Murphy) has deep bags under his eyes, and for Emma they accentuated a flawless skin facial structure, light makeup, and both the clothes for John and Emma, were out of date a bit, John having a disheveled look, baggy suit, ill fitting to look as if it was a hand-me-down he got in the closet of a house he grew up in.
You can CLEAR as day see the pressing issues of anxiety & something not right beween these two characters, and with the way the community tramples into John/Emma's life, it throws them way off their routined daily life of solitude, John has to deal with his time schedule being thrown off, he has a precise time he eats, dressed, goes to work, shopping, and after work going to the park to throw stone in the water, which seems to be his only time to lay back and calm down.
The only reason I didnt give this film the full five stars, is because how slow the beginning and middle was, though it increasingly got more dramatic, and now that I look at it, it would have to have gone slow in the beginning because it was a show of how life had been for John after his mother passed away, he kept her door locked since, and how something as odd as a train wreck in his front yard got the townspeople all over his house, and his sanity starts to unravel.
Im surprised though, that the townspeople, as much as they were THERE, didnt offer to help him, found out why, Emma and John were NEVER once together in the same place, no one ever once figured it out, and that seemed bizarre to me.
The ppl he worked with at the bank for who knows how long-Fanny( Susan Sarandon) I would have hoped figured out the personalities in one when she visited "Emma" for her idea on the children and women's shelter, but Fanny seemed to be wrapped up in the world of politics, rallying, just really benefiting her standings.
Ellen Page was a victim of John's mother and John and the ugly side of what it was like in that house, I found it REAL unfortunate John couldnt SEE Jake, the child of Ellen Page (Maggie) as HIS product.
...but again, his mother forced, coerced Maggie & Him together. Its a very sad situation, and the ending One of the characters loses, and the other takes over, and hides back in solitude again. As was sad, it WAS similar to a John Hitchcock theatric.
Well done with the story & for Cillian Murphy.
