Review of PCU (1994) by Alex C — 22 Nov 2010
I haven't read any other regular user reviews yet, but I did check out the T-meter critics, and UNFORTUNATELY, most of them haven't seen this or reviewed this movie yet for some reason. If you're in the mood for a comedy, this movie deserves a solid watch.
PCU has a mission, and every bit of that mission is achieved by the director and actors in this film, being: to show the ridiculousness of college life in the 90's. Aside from the Tom's-being-chased scenes (which beats the alternative of exploring the various "causeheads" in depth. Ugh!), this movie is a scarily-real knock to the absurdity of 90's college culture. Jeremy Piven isn't good, but GREAT here; born into the role of Droz. He's a genuine jackass, very intuitive, comfortable in his skin while others are deep in self-discovery, aware of the consequences of his actions, and intelligent enough not to care, this is the guy the system does NOT want in their system too long because he can see through the mire. Spade is brilliant as a young republican, and Favreau gives validity to his village idiot.
The supporting cast is great, filling the memorable moments with a plethora of what's-his-name-again?-faces, much like how people hold those crazy memories of their own college life. This is a very quotable film, so feel free to watch it a few times, preferably once with a few beers. PCU is a fun ride for all 80 minutes, and it keeps the pace up. Extra note: Megan Ward is not given enough credit for being exceptionally undercover-hot here as Katy, the freshman. I guess the only quandary in my mind is WHY IS SHE SINGLE? Hot freshman+college=NO WAY. Sorry for yelling at everyone. Now go watch this movie.
