Review of Pay It Forward (2000) by Paul W — 23 Apr 2013
Not too many movies can claim to have invented a phrase that entered the lexicon. Just as "pushing the outside of the envelope" is a phrase everyone knows the meaning of, whether or not they've seen "The Right Stuff", "Pay it Forward" is something that people say and do now, regardless of whether they're even aware of the movie.
In their drive to maintain the purity of their cynicism and their rush to find flaws in a feel good movie, critics almost entirely missed the boat on this movie. Despite it's scripting flaws (sell documented elsewhere), the movie elicits powerful performances from a talented cast and crew.
That's unsurprising, because the movie contains a powerful idea, in the form of a deceptively simple message: the world can be a better place, if you just try to make it one. Imperfect, but completely enjoyable.
