Review of Pawn Sacrifice (2015) by The D — 14 Oct 2015
Sometimes everyone does their job well, but the final result is less than satisfying. It is a slow, predicable descent into madness rather than a character arc. We have seen this too often; the talent and the enablers, the disfunctional mother, and the over-the-top public adulation.
The secondary themes of the Cold War etc are there but fall flat, and nothing is developed well IMHO. It's an interesting history lesson, but as a rich, full film experience it missed the mark for me.
