Maguire's portrayal of Fischer is unequivocally the film's greatest strength. Unfortunately, well-acted and well-written and well-whatevered as it was, the film overall was rather lacking in its storytelling.
It reduced the man's entire interesting and troubled life into a few brief point-in-time segments. Any semblance of an arc was truncated and ironed out until the story was almost devoid of, well, story.
