Review of Pawn Sacrifice (2015) by Sarrah S — 01 Jan 2016
Mini review 4/5*.
Pawn Sacrifice is one helluva inspiring tale, the film is based (a true story)on the life of one of the greatest chess players ever Bobby Fischer. This man did not only play chess to strive for ultimate greatness, he played for his country USA, he pretty much fought a cold war battle against the USSR, on the chess table. The film though muddled at times deviating away from the chess board was throughly enjoyable. PS evokes a sense of patriotism, and makes one cheer in the victory of the US. But PS is a winner because of Tobey Maguire's awe inspiring performance. He plays the shades of genius to paranoia to perfection. There was a scene in the pre climax when the whole word is clapping for Bobby after a chess victory ,but staying true to character Maguire doesn't flinch, and shows no emotion after all the adulation, it was acting at its best. A highly recommended watch, and a salute to Bobby Fischer.
