Review of Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009) by Adam U — 31 Jul 2011
There's a scene in "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" where the titular character is playing "Rock Band" while a huge group of criminals invades a shopping mall. The scene is actually fun and creative but I noticed that the guitar he was using did not have those colored fret buttons that these guitars have. It may be nit picking but it helped making my opinion of "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and in the end I was surprised of how much dissapointing this movie was.
Kevin James stars as Paul Blart, a security officer at a shopping center. At home he is a single father and ambitions entering to the real police force. While he is working, he meets a young woman named Amy ( played by Jayma Mays), for whom he obviously falls in love with. After this, the mall is suddenly in the middle of an invasion, and it's up to Paul to sasve the day.
What a waste of a movie. Even if not that awful, it was a film that so much potential to be a fun and entertaining movie. And the general premise is not that bad. There are some ( very few, though) okay scenes and some decent dialogue. However, the movie is, overall, dull. And I mean, dull! I just wanted to end and it never seem to want to reach to a conclusion. When I feel this about a movie, I know that I won't end watching this and like it. At some point I start laughing because I remembered a joke from "Airplane!" and that's not a good sign either. Furthermore for most part, the movie is pretty generic. Some parts are actually pretty invetive, but overall it never brought something new. Near the end, I actually paused my Meo box ( a portuguese version of whatyou call TiVo) and guessed one of the final lines, saying it out loud.
The most decent acting about "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" is probably tha acting, which in generall was okay. The best actor is probably Kevin James as Paul Blart, although I kind of liked the villain. While not prticularly hilarious, Kevin James is a mifly funny guy and a good actor, and in a way he kind of safes this movie for being a disaster. He and Jayma Mays actually have some chemestry, although the movie doesn't allow it to develop properly.
I guess this is a nice movie for families, and nothing god awful is feautured but "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" could deliver so much more than it did, since it was supported by a weak script and overall dull execution.
