Review of Paul (2011) by Alex O — 21 Aug 2012
Paul is a likable road trip comedy with fantastic visual effects but the jokes are hit-or-miss. It's nice to see Simon Pegg and Nick Frost back together since Hot Fuzz (2007), but the film feels like it needed the helping hand of Edgar Wright, who directed and co-wrote the aforementioned action farce and 2004's zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead.
The film appeals to fantasy/sci-fi fans by presenting pop culture material and paying homage but rarely ever doing better than just quoting and name-dropping. Many of the gags are anatomical or poking fun at conservatives, which I can enjoy when it's done in a more subtle manner.
