Review of Paul (2011) by Pamela C — 13 Oct 2012
Very funny, smart writing and TONS of in-jokes for us sci-fi nerds. Also, it was surprisingly charming and had a couple heart-tugging moments. Seth Rogen really brings the alien to life in a unique way, playing him as one of the guys instead of a fish out of water.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are as good as they've always been. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig give further proof that they've been slumming it on SNL for a while now. Their stars are starting to burn brighter than TV can contain.
While not as fresh as Shaun of the Dead, or on-the-nose as Hot Fuzz, it's certainly Pegg and Frost's most accessible work to date and Greg Motolla (Superbad) does an admirable job making people forget that these two guys usually work best with director Edgar Wright.
I think Paul will pleasantly surprise people when they see it.
