Review of Paul (2011) by Joshua G — 22 Sep 2013
This is (sadly) less than the sum of its considerable parts. Greg Mottola directed Adventureland and Superbad, which are both terrific. Pegg & Frost (who write and star) are legends, from Spaced through Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. Even without Edgar Wright, this should be pretty good. The supporting cast is terrific.
But...
...why so many jokes about them being a gay couple? why so many jokes about alien genitalia and probes? why so many, many, many irrelevant and only occasionally funny swear-word-combinations? I laughed quite a bit, Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig are very funny, and it generally zips along. But too many times I found myself annoyed by the film, and the choices that were made in the writing and performances.
