Review of Paul (2011) by Chris B — 02 Feb 2015
Paul doesn't measure up to the best works of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, but their chemistry is enough to at least make the film enjoyable, though forgettable. The two friends are at Comic-con and decide to go on a tour of the most famous alien landing sites in the United States when they come across Paul, an actual alien (as voiced by Seth Rogen).
This is exactly as boring as it sounds for a premise, adding very little in the way of humour to the road trip genre, only really finding its humour in science fiction references. There are some great cameos, but none of the characters are particularly memorable, and there is even a romance that feels forced at best.
It is predictable fare, but at no point did I find myself bored. I wouldn't really recommend this one unless you are a big fan of Pegg and Frost. It just seemed to miss the magic touch of Edgar Wright behind the camera.
3 out of 5 stars.
