Review of Patton (1970) by Min K — 10 Feb 2010
What can you say about "Patton" that hasn't already been said. First of all, without Scott's brilliant portrayal of the lead character, the film would have been one long and boring slog.
Scott conveys the complexity of Patton so adeptly, you come away from the film feeling like you truly caught a glimpse of what the real General was like. And a well-planned script also balances illumining Patton's glory as well as his less admirable traits.
Jerry Goldsmith's score also stirs up this mix of attitudes combining very fluffy patriotic themes with more dissonant and mysterious tonalities. The cinematography and choice of camera shots is stunning, especially given the sheer scope of this project.
Of course, being an epic film, Patton does go on for quite a long time, but it is well worth the watch for war and film buffs alike.
