Review of Patriots Day (2016) by Mandela W — 02 Feb 2017
I remember in 2013 when the Boston Bombing went down. It was tragic and I remember the coverage on the tube. I wasn't at the event but I felt for those people. However I was amazed it how well Boston finest and the FBI came together, shut the city down and found the bombers in a matter of days. Patriots Day gives an inside and detailed look into what happened those several days and also a surprising look at the tsarnaev brothers. An emotional story that shows how powerful unity in a community and a city for that matter can be.
April 15th, 2013 was the day that the Tsarnaev brothers bombed the Boston Marathon race. The bombings injured and killed many who attended. Mark Wahlberg plays fictional character Tommy Saunders one of the many cops who jumped into action to try and find these criminals. Over a span of a few days Tommy, Comissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), FBI Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Jeffrey Pugliese (JK Simmons) and more all work together to capture or kill the brothers before they can go and do what they did to someone else.
An amazing picture that was honest and unflinching. Peter Berg tackles this story in a very interesting fashion, from the perspective of several individuals. this wasn't just something that affected one person it affected many and through his directing and choice of storytelling that is easily recognized and must be commended. One of the most intriguing aspects of the film was seeing the family life of the tsarnaev brothers before the killing. Shows they were somewhat normal citizens before they commited the act. Even there tense relationship was intriguing to watch.
The film gives a real distinct look into how a manhunt really goes down. the shooutout scene is one of the films highlights. incredibly intense and you almost feel like the police could get slaughtered by these two men with bombs. I liked the ending with the interviews and some actual footage from those days. Great cinematography and editing on the film.
Great acting from the cast and impressively done accent from John goodman, Michelle Monahan and JK simmons. excellent work from Mark Wahlberg playing this cop who wanted to step up and show what he was made of as a cop and he gets a major shot here. He brought a real sense of emotion and charisma behind this character. It was bold of Melissa benoist to portray the wife of one of the brothers especially since the real life person probably receives death threats and evil glares on a daily basis. Impressive work from this young actress.
Patriots Day is a bold and moving picture that everyone must see.
