Review of Patriot Games (1992) by Kevin H — 01 Aug 2010
Ah, the early 90s, when films started adding a plot to the machine wielding good guy. Yes I grew up in the 90s and managed to NOT see this untill 2010. This fllm delivers a straight forward plot line with good supporting performances, but is a little run-of-the-mill in terms of action flicks.
The bad guys, of course, train constantly with machine guns, yet never seem to hit their targets. The good guy can take down 12 bad guys with 10 bullets in a pistol. Like all films of it's day it needs a dash if heartbreaking realism.
Maybe the daughter should have died to inhance the grief in our hero? The attitude of the film is typical of the early 90s, a little dull and bland with color pallette and alot of "pan and scan" camera movements.
By the way, did anyone else notice that it wasn't dark enough to be using NVGs? Throw in a fedora, a whip, and a couple of Nazis and this could have been another Indiana Jones film. The film is entertaining and overall well done, but suffers from predictability; nothing that happens is a surprise.
The sattelite feed view of the raid on the terrorist camp was an original scene that I thought defined the film. The questionable ending was a nice touch. To be fair, it was top notch for it's day.
.. but that's not my problem.
