Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Michael Y — 14 Oct 2011

Even in his early years as a director, Stanley Kurbrick proved he is one of the best directors of all time. Paths of Glory is a unique and morally challenging film with very few moments without awe inspiring moments.

Based on Humphrey Cobb's WWI novel of the demoralization of war, Paths of Glory stars Kirk Douglas as the duty torn, Col. Dax. When an order to take over German territory results in retreat, someone has to pay. General Paul Mireau calls for the court martial of 3 men accused of cowardice to be executed. But where is the line drawn between right and wrong when it comes to military duty and human life? There is not 1 single moment in this movie that wasn't intriguing and emotionally compelling. Paths of Glory is a unique and finely told story, made even better through terrific performances. This movie is a great philosophical movie that makes us think about the 2 possitions, what the definition of duty and cowardice is, and ultimately crushes our expectations. And this was quite a real thing in the French army in WWI. It would be treason and result in execution. If you think you know what to expect from this war movie; think again.

Paths of Glory probably has to one of the gloomiest and most modern war movie of its day. And it didn't even have to rely on blood and gore. (cough*privateryan*cough) No, it wasn't the subject matter or the deaths in this movie that made it compelling. It is Stanley Kubrick and his brilliant mind. Shot in Black and White, Kubrick uses his awe inspiring cinematography to disorient the audiences feelings, raising suspence and making every moment soul crushing. This movie is beautifully photographed, using plenty of hard lights and creative camera angles. The editing in the transitions I feel don't give enough time between scenes, but the editing proves to be no problem when the movie reaches its incredible climax., or should I say *climaxes because this movie has so many brilliant moments.

I don't normally like the war genre, with the exception of ones that are half war-half something else. But out of the many things I've learned from watching Paths of Glory, the one that sticks out is 'always put your trust in Stanley Kubrick'. The best director ever makes one of the best war movies ever. Definitely a must see for everyone.
