Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Dimitris L — 12 Oct 2012
One of the best war movies ever made. ww1 doesn't have the movie treatment that it deserves with so many famous battles, the fall of empires, the rise of communism, modern warfare as we know it originated between 1914-1918.
after the twin horrors of verdun and the somme, the french put robert nievelle in charge. he planned a not so secret attack on the german front that bulged in front of him. but the germans wisened up and pulled back to a defensive wall in the hindenburg line which made any frontal assault a suicide mission.
the french govt was ready to fire him before the battle because its chances of success was slim and none. the ego and arrogance that had alienated all but his closest advisers got in the way and over the top the french went and died by the thousands.
the french army then mutinied against their generals and refused to storm out of the trench. the mutiny was put down and there were soldiers executed for insubordination. so there is some solid history in this movie.
