Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Monty W — 17 Apr 2012
The real star of this film is the central attack sequence. Kubrick uses tracking shots to create momentum as well as a sense of subjective presence in the trench and on the battle field. Further, he chooses key moments to focus on the faces of his actors, bringing an underlying sense of the importance and value of humanity in contrast to the opinions of the powers that be (as well as the momentum of the story itself).
The beautifully ambiguous conclusion ties it together perfectly.
