Review of Pathology (2008) by Greg R — 18 Feb 2010
A seriously, seriously, SERIOUSLY guilty pleasure of mine. I saw this movie in theaters on a complete blind ticket buy, having heard nothing about it. I was greatly surprised at just how sleazy this film is. I felt like I had to take a shower after.
If you could kill anyone and get away with it, who would it be?
Milo Ventimiglia replies "Anyone. We would kill anyone. It's in our nature to kill.".
A script with some well-rounded characters and surprises rounds out what is a darkly fun and gory character piece.
Milo needs to get some kudos here; this character gets sucked into a game where a group of pathology students try to create the perfect murder and actually QUIZ each other on how the murderer did it. That's a bit screwed up, to say the least... Milo brings real strain and moral ambiguity to this character, as he quickly begins to realize that he's in far too deep.
The rest of the supporting cast is solid as well, with Alyssa Milano being merely forgettable.
But the filth and sleaze of the film is what charmed me, strangely enough. These upper-class kids party hard; threesomes, crack cocaine, hookers, and murder all round out their activities, and the film doesn't shy away from anything. It's absolutely oozing with sexuality. The gore is gross and realistic. The best way of describing this film is just... dirty. And there's something charming about the way the director and script frames it all. This is a good movie about dirty people doing awful things.
