Review of Paterson (2016) by James R — 21 Jan 2017
Slightly disappointed in this one. Paterson follows a man named Paterson (Adam Driver) through a week of his life. He drives a bus in a place called Paterson, New Jersey. On the side he writes poetry that usually reflect his daily routine.
He wakes up kisses his girlfriend Laura (Golshifteh Farahani) goes to work, takes his lunch and writes a little, goes back to work, gets off and has dinner with his girlfriend, takes his dog out for a walk, grabs a drink at his favorite bar.
..rinse and repeat every day basically. Laura keeps pushing Paterson to let others read his work and/or share it with the world. That's literally the movie. Things just seem to kind of happen. It's literally a slice of a dudes life.
I would even go as far to say that Paterson isn't that good of a poet. Yes he's creative and his poems come off as a bit funny, but its more personal reflections on his own life. It's Laura that keeps pushing him to publish his work.
Laura is very much trying "to find herself." She's an artist that paints everything in black and white, one day she wants to be a baker and then another day she wants to become a country singer.
..she comes off just a lil bit annoying quite frankly. They both obviously love each other and Paterson is literally the nicest guy alive and I almost feels like Laura pushes him to do things he doesn't want to do.
It was really confusing for me. I would say this is a red box rent for most people. It was entertaining, but it didn't really move me in any kind of way that made me want to ever watch it again. Give it a look eventually it's still well acted, but like I said it won't be for everyone.
