Review of Paterson (2016) by Tatsuhito K — 22 Jan 2017
Like most Jarmusch films, "Paterson" is not for everyone and I'm sure there will be some people out there who would leave the theater complaining. "Oh my gawd, it was so boring! It was so pretentious and nothing happened!" Well, fuck 'em.
This is a wonderful portrait of the beauty of everyday life, a genuinely charming film about a bus driver who is very content with his life, and nothing is forced or contrived or feels artificial. It's a quiet, Zen-like film that captures the mundanities of daily life, and Jarmusch (one of the finest directors working in American independent cinema) does an excellent job of making it cinematic and visually poetic.
Adam Driver is very charming as Paterson the bus driver, and I loved his relationship with his wife (Golshifteh Farahani, equally charming) and dog. If you are a fan of Jarmusch and his minimalist style like I am, you'll dig this film.
It's really lovely.
