Review of Paterson (2016) by John R — 16 Oct 2016
Jim Jarmusch writes and directs a picture that is beautiful. Adam Driver is ready for prime time, unfortunately, the movie isn't. First of all, this is fantasy. Too many coincidences happen for me to buy that they occur.
Driver is funny and believable in his unemotional role, but then out of nowhere comes random emotion. His character is uneven. He is fantastic, but when the best part of the movie is a dog we're in deep trouble.
Went in with really high expectations, maybe too high and was left very disheartened. This is a unique film, but that doesn't make it good. So I'm conflicted. A lovable dog, some great bar scenes a few laughs, and Adam Driver.
On the other hand for a movie about Paterson named after him and the town he lives, we don't learn enough about him. What defines him? Why is he the way he is? Maybe we're not supposed to know, but it would have been much more interesting than what we're left with.
5.6.
