Review of Patch Adams (1998) by David B — 23 Jan 2013
Hands down my least favorite Robin Williams movie. Not only is it emotionally forced, but it completely squandered the potential of a great movie. I love Robin Williams, but man, he was annoying. His dialogue was consisted of screaming and insulting people who disagree with his ideas.
He also shows up in scenes where he really doesn't belong, like a scene where a wife and kids leave their dying father as Williams pops in and steals the scene from them. Probably my least favorite part of the movie was the romance between Williams and Carin.
This has to be one of the most insulting things a filmmaker can do. Carin ends up dying at one point in the movie, I almost felt bad for her when I realized in real life, the person who died was a man who had no romantic connection to Adams at all.
This is basically the writer saying "screw you we need a cheap romantic plot point to make the death sadder". This makes the film seem disgusting to me, honestly it's pretty hard to watch.
Bottom line, this movie took great potential and created a painfully forced mess of a movie.
