Review of Patch Adams (1998) by Grant T — 21 Mar 2015
While I am not the biggest Robin Williams fan, I will admit that when he was good, he was pretty damn funny. But unfortunately, when he was bad, he was pretty damn bad. And Patch Adams is a great example of how bad he could be.
Granted, I doubt anyone could have been good in this movie. In order to be good, you would need a decent script, a decent director, and other actors who were decent. And Patch Adams doesn't fulfill any of those.
But the thing that truly makes this film bad is it's awful, horrible, disgusting, terrible, dreadful portrayal of "a true story". The real Patch Adams didn't act like a complete idiot and clown.
The film version of Patch Adams spends half the movie acting like a monkey in order to "make patients laugh". The real Patch Adams actually knew how to be a doctor. The film version of Patch Adams seems like he has no clue how to be a doctor.
The film even switches the gender of a real-life person in order to create some romantic subplot. Frankly, the movie by itself is bad. But it's insistence on advertising itself as "based on a true story" is what truly makes this film awful.
