Review of Passion (2013) by Tracy F — 06 Dec 2013
This is one of the strangest films I've ever watched.
Even by Brian de Palma.
The guy is known to be an esteemed filmmaker but this is bizarre.
I think he got misplaced in the wrong time era because the music is so out of place here and quite overbearing at times.
It made me think of watching a 90's TV thriller.
Still the performances by both Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace are something to be commended for.
They pull off these characters so full of nuance.
The so-called twist is really, really silly given what you're watching and there's one scene in here that is downright confusing.
Like really, what does this have to do with anything?
By the 3rd act it is very confusing as to what's going on.
Of course I guess in the style of Hitchcock Palma describes what is considered the 'perfect murder' of crime, betrayal, lies and passion for that matter.
It's not one of his finest but very, very challenging.
