Review of Passion (2013) by Filmgrinder S — 31 Dec 2013
First review of 2014...
Not the best start to my movie watching for the new year.
DePalma has a lot of style about him, but this film feels like its ben lifted from the 1980s, and not in an Expendables type of way.
The film uses many techniques to tell its story in a very stylised way, but the lack of erotic charge between any of the characters really hurts the film. Having McAdams in the film sadly did not help, as she just didn't break free of her usual romantic comedy roles well enough, and Rapace seemed to go from one extreme to the other with her characterisation, which whilst possibly part of her characters own performance throughout the film, it didn't ring very true. Herfurth, playing a lesbian in love with Rapace, failed to show any infatuation at all towards her and didn't come off in the role at all.
Dream sequences, over the top music (including one of the most 'Mickey-Moused' music cues I've heard in a long time), confusing plot devices and silly twists, all add up to a rather terrible film that hopefully does not set the tone for my movie watching in 2014.
