Review of Passengers (2016) by Nolan M — 27 Apr 2017
I saw this movie well after it came out and without reading any reviews or getting any feedback on it from those who saw it. I really didn't want any spoilers. In the end, I was totally blown away. A very solid sci-do flick (which is hard to come by) in itself, but also an amazingly human story that captures the viewer (so long as ur looking for more than fighting robots). This movie is a pure joy to watch again and again.
Curiously, I pulled up critic reviews after the fact and couldn't believe my eyes. I do t know if we saw different movies so I watched it again... same result. Fantastic movie that teaches u an it more every time u see it.
In fact... other than the last 20 mins, u really can't compare this flick to Gravity (which so many have done). Only during that brief point does it stoop to such shallow depths. I'm sorry, but Gravity was terrible. Any critic who rates Gravity higher than passengers has zero credibility. Seriously.
I'm not saying this movie goes to have its weak points (all movies do), but the story is deep, the acting is sensational, and the special effects are extremely believable. I'd argue that it's the absolute brilliance of the first 90 minutes that causes a let down for the ending. Its not that the ending is bad, it's just that it can't quite hold up to the rest of the movie.
Unless u are simply looking for loud noise, explosions, and hollywoods most overhyped darlings, go see this, and u will not be disappointed.
