Review of Passengers (2016) by Patricia W — 07 Sep 2017
Take two good looking actors, a thread bare plot and some cheesy dialogue and you'll have a movie that's slightly better than this one. Both Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence have proved their acting chops in other movies and though they try their damnedest, all the crying in the world can't fill up this empty shell of a movie.
Nothing really happens until half an hour into the movie and even then there's very little to keep you interested. Jim Preston, played by Pratt, wakes up on his flight from earth to another planet but oh no, there's been a malfunction, he's been woken up 90 years too early and he's the only one awake.
He then happens to spy an attractive woman in one of the hibernation pods, Aurora, played by Lawrence, and like a shop lifter at the creepiest mall in the world decides to take her, waking her up against her will to die before reaching their destination so that he won't be alone anymore.
This is when the movie turns into a cheesy romance which I suppose might be entertaining to some but it never really loses the creepy stalker factor of what the audience knows Jim has done to Aurora which killed any semblance of romance for me.
One of the only good things about this movie is that the ship itself and the cinematography is easy on the eyes, in a clinical sort of way, but the movie cuts back to the ship rotating in space so often it's like it's afraid you're going to forget or dare I say, fall asleep.
So, like the hundreds of other passengers on that ship, I have to say I wish that I'd slept through this one too.
