Review of Party Monster (2003) by Zane T — 19 May 2009
The last thing we need is another movie about drug addicts, but I don't think Michael Alig or James St. James were ever really addicted to the drugs as much as the attention they got from the nigh life.
It's one thing to be in an apartment with a bunch of losers shooting up, but to do it in a club with a legion of partygoers around you is something else. Alig and St. James were the seminal frienemies, two people who probably couldn't stand each other but at the same time couldn't afford not to leech on to one another.
Sometimes the party has to stop and we have to go home. The characters in this movie always wanted to be the center of attention. Even Alig's mother enjoys the glamor her son lives brings when she scoffs going back home on a bus when she came to NYC in a limo.
You ask yourself, why did Angel hang around Alig when all he ever did was insult Angel, take his drugs and not pay him. Because Angel still wanted to be in the party and that cost him his life.
