Review of Parting Glances (1986) by Thomas L — 31 Oct 2007
Simply my favorite movie. It was the first film I saw with gay lead characters where the story wasn't about them being gay. Their sexuality is a given. It isn't the problem or the conflict of the film.
It shows gay men in relationships without having to explain them. That was revolutionary. After its theatrical run, it was nearly ten years before I found it on video. I bought it and hoped that it would still hold up.
It did and it does. PARTING GLANCES has a quiet, very human, power. It trusts the characters to tell the story without feeling the need to explain everything. It trusts its audience too. It's a beautiful film.
