Review of Parking (2008) by Mattias E — 12 Apr 2009
Chung Mong-Hong decides to go all auteur with this debut, writing, directing and shooting the movie himself. Chung is no doubt an expert cinematographer with a great eye, displaying a range of techniques.
The broken down narrative with it's stops and starts works pretty well too, except that it only scrapes on the surface of events and won't let the characters develop. Chung is really only close to something real and engaging when concentrating on the troubled relationship between Chang Chen and Kwai Lunmei, a story full of potential that now seems lost among all the odd characters and quirky situations Parking has to offer.
The deadpan Chang Chen also has a few Buster Keaton-moments worth your while, before the somewhat forced ending. Things don't always have to come full circle, you know.
