Review of Paris, Texas (1984) by Chris Z — 24 Mar 2010
Mixed feelings about this movie, but the one thing I know is that the photography is GORGEOUS. Truly brilliant cinematography, some of it reminds me very much of some of Christopher Doyle's work with Wong Kar Wai, just beautiful painting with the camera. Slow, but compelling through the first 2/3rds, then it got really bogged down in long monologues which weren't strong enough to keep the movie going despite some incredible acting. Impressive, but not really my cup of tea exactly, it needed to be cut tighter and written more tautly IMO.
The Criterion BD is visually brilliant, *except* for some moderate EE which was unfortunate, and some aliasing, perhaps it was a 2K scan tweaked to 1920? Hard to say.
