Review of Paris Je T'aime (2006) by Kevin Val B — 06 Apr 2010
Paris, je t'aime is a collection of shorts set in the different districts of Paris. Taken as a whole, this film is a vibrant celebration of love in the city of lights. The shorts are varied enough that there's different picks for everyone.
Humor, romance, longing and despair - whatever the city means and seems to you, it is depicted in this film. Personally, being a foreigner enraptured by the mystique of Paris, my favorite was the final short, directed by Alexander Payne and starring Margo Martindale as a tourist who recalls, in rough French, how and when she fell in love with the city and how it "fell in love with her".
I was impressed at how she expressed her awe of the city with the right mix of melancholy, skepticism, helplessness and excitement, as if she was falling in love with another person. My runner-up favorite is the one directed by Gus Van Sant, starring Gaspard Ulliel as a guy who, almost out of the blue, tells this other guy he meets that he is his soulmate.
It captures the spirit of spontaneity of the city, as well as the endless possibilities it offers of meeting the 'one'. All the shorts are beautifully shot and manage to extol the physical beauty of the city, enhancing the quiet beauty of the little stories that are being told.
If it was even possible, this movie made me fall in love more with Paris.
