Review of Paris Je T'aime (2006) by Sydney Y — 26 Jan 2012
A bit hit-or-miss overall, though absolutely packed to the brim with familiar and wildly talented faces. The segment by the Coens was terrific. I absolutely hated the one with the English tourists at Oscar Wilde's grave.
Ugh. Wilde would not approve of being included in such sentimental garbage. He and Jane Austen are both so often misinterpreted and romanticized by popular culture nowadays. It's a little appalling.
The one with Elijah Wood was stylishly directed. Gaspard Ulliel's segment was good, and I liked the one with the Muslim girl and the boy, but the only one that really stuck with me is the one by Alexander Payne, with Margo Martindale, which made me cry.
I think you have to speak French to really get just how pathetic the main character is (her French is seriously terrible), but she tries so hard and is still so lonely and has a lot of love to give and she still tries to be positive and maybe it's my own bundle of neuroses that makes me so emotional about it, but Jesus, man.
That segment is really, really sad, by far the most poignant one in the bunch and the only one I would rewatch.
