Review of Pariah (2011) by John M — 20 Jan 2012
The performances are great, but I still felt somewhat uninvolved in Lee's character. Writer/Director Dee Rees takes shots of very intimate moments and lets us reflect on them, but it's not enough for us to get into the skin of a character who we're really trying to be put in the position of.
I was afraid this film might fall into a typical "Festival" film realm, and somewhat does, but it has enough emotional moments and personal trauma from the writer and director we can feel to make it worthwhile.
