Review of Pariah (2011) by Aidan H — 09 May 2012
Although it comes across occasionally like a TV movie, Pariah's domestic teen drama nevertheless nimbly sidesteps the generic coming-of-age cliches via a brace of captivating performances from its cast.
Neatly blending a variety of issues from teen sexuality, gender identity and religious intolerance into the mix, director/writer Rees weaves an intimate portrait of a girl attempting to break free of conformity.
With Hollywood's constant portrayal of blacks as thugs and criminals, its reassuring to know that there are film makers out there proving that middle-class dramas are not just a white preserve. Give it a whirl.
