Review of Parenthood (1989) by Justin P — 01 May 2008
Along with THE PAPER, this is probably my favourite Ron Howard picture. I think that anyone who has a big family will really appreciate it; and anyone with a sense of humour will really appreciate it. The thing is, though, that it isn't all laughs. There is some serious stuff happening in this family; but there is always humour laced in with that seriousness. That's because that is life. There is always going to be something funny attached to something serious - that's where comedy comes from.
It is one of the most honest portrayals of real home life possible. I'm not talking about the fantasies we see in movies where it's all the Waltons and everyone is loving and earnest, or the Menendez family, where the kids kill the parents and everyone is in a continual state of drama. No, this is a real family. They love each other, they hate each other, they fight, they laugh, they share their lives.
One of the things that makes or breaks a movie like this is the cast and you could not have found a more perfect cast. Every actor, from the oldest (I LOVE Grandma) to the youngest (the head butting Justin) is perfectly cast and delivers a spot on performance. Some of my favourites:
Dianne Wiest "Whooo! Here's one for my wallet!".
Keanu Reeves "...but they'll let any butt reamin' asshole be a father.".
Mary Steenburgen "I happen to LIKE the rollercoaster!".
Jason Robards "..because I know you think I was a shitty father... Thank you for not arguing with me".
Steve Martin "Keep Patty away from my brother. He'll suck the intelligence right out of her.".
It's one gem right after another, guys. It's one to watch with your loved ones.
An absolute treasure.
