Review of Parenthood (1989) by Lucas Y — 31 Oct 2008
Wow did Jason Robards have some messed up children! This was one of Ron Howards best films and something everyone can relate to. An amazing cast led by Steve Martin at his finest really makes this special. Dianne West is great as the single mom with 2 out of control teenangers, including a very young Joaquin Phoenix. Her daughter secretly weds Keanu Reeves in a role that was tailor made for him. "I didn't get like 13,000 on my SAT's... okay! I'm dumb!" Sir Tom Hulce plays the youngest brother who's a gambling addict and is the father of a little black boy named Cool. Hulce is great in every role he plays... very underrated actor. Martins other brother played by Rick Moranis is probably the most successful sibling, but has to sing his wife back to him because he neglects her for his child prodigy. She was way too hot for him anyways. Finally Martin is the lead who plays the poster boy dad that every kid should have. You really feel for the guy in certain scenes where he's being a good father, but doesn't feel he is. The scene where his kids baseball team finally wins a game and he's dancing on the field is great.
One of my favorite lines ever in a film came from Helen Shaw when she's discussing relationships with Martin & Mary Steenburgen. She played Martins Grandma and she was actually 91 years old when this film was made. "I love carnivals. Your grandpa used to take me on the roller coaster. I remember I was scared, but that's just how roller coasters are. You're scared, but you're also excited, joyful and full of life. Roller Coasters aren't for everyone. Some people prefer the merry go round which is smooth and predictable. I like the roller coaster.".
