Review of Parenthood (1989) by Ben F — 09 Jul 2010
"Parenthood" was truly a sweet, warm, compassionate, heart-felt comedy. You don't really get this humor nowadays. It might be pretty outdated, but "Parenthood" is still a great movie.
The movie just follows the life of Steve Martin and the relationship he has with his kids. The film also parallels with other families going through similar issues. What's done so well in this film is that it doesn't try to do too much. It mixes the perfect blend of sadness and comedy to make you really care about the characters, and that's why the movie was so affective.
I thought that Steve Martin did a good job in the parent roll, which was a million times better than the later remake of "Cheaper by the Dozen." I thought that he was sweet, and the character's compassion towards his kids, and his all around whole family really transgressed well through Martin.Everyone else did a pretty good job too. I actually liked Keanu Reeves in this movie, because I think he just acted like himself, playing a pretty stupid dude, who has a good heart. I think that's him, so he did it pretty well.
Anyway the comedy and drama that the actors generated were all well done, but the feel of the film is what it was all about. The movie had a specific style to it that just made me feel comfortable and secure. I don't know what it was, but something about the atmosphere of the film was very well done.
I don't know what else to say about "Parenthood" accept it was just a very good movie. It was funny and dramatic at certain points, and Steve Martin's sweet performance, as well as everyone else in the acting department doing a pretty good job, make this film definitely worth the view. Good movie.
