Review of Parental Guidance (2012) by Scott A — 11 May 2013
Yeah this movie looks like a MEET THE PARENTS type of rip off, but I found it very entertaining. I went in expecting an unfunny comedy with everyone yelling at each other, but Crystal is very funny in this, and he and Midler have great chemistry. And for once there isn't any fighting, these two characters are totally devoted to each other...they just want to be apart of their Grand Kids', and their daughter's lives.
I thought all three kids were good and very adorable, which is rare in a family movie. The cliche is that they are all annoying brats who have to be taught a lesson, but really here they all learn their own lessons of growing up and discovering a piece of who they are.
HUGE fan of Tomei and she's really good here. Not the cliche nagging mother, but a mother who wants the best for her children, but is happy to guide them when they decide to make changes or whatever.
Would have loved to see more of Crystal announce, as they are the funniest bits in the film.
I also loved seeing The Walking Dead's Madison Lintz in another role. She was so nice when I met her and hope she continues to find better and better roles.
I really don't get all the hate on this film. It was a terrific family outing. And it flies by too.
