Review of ParaNorman (2012) by Brodie A — 02 Apr 2013
ParaNorman is the story of a young boy, Norman, who has the ability to see and speak with the dead. He is a very misunderstood boy. The town was placed under a curse 300 years ago. The curse returns and awakens the dead. Zombies roam the town while Norman tries to figure out how to stop it. He makes some unlikely friends and forms a better bond with his very popular sister. He learns later that the "witch" responsible for the curse was a girl his age who also had the ability to see dead people. She had some extra powers that scared the rest of the village even more. Norman takes the time to solve the problem versus just reading a bedtime story which would only put her to sleep for another year.
One of my favorite things about ParaNorman is that it is a stop-motion film. Think Coraline. The animation is amazing. It is more of a comedy mixed with a few thriller elements. There were a few scenes I could see kids being frightened by. Mainly the witch scenes towards the end of the movie. It is a family safe movie all around. Very goofy and fun. Worth renting if you are in need of some quick entertainment and unable to make a decision on which movie to watch.
Some fun celeb voices include: Leslie Mann as the voice of Norman's mom. Casey Affleck as the voice of Mitch (Norman's friends older buff brother).
