Review of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014) by Alexander M — 17 Jan 2014
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is a prime example of how the Paranormal Activity franchise is now going for cash grabs rather than giving a good horror film. First, the film is not even scary, not even a bit.
This film is a jump-scare galore. That's not scary, that just means that your theater has great sound quality. Now I'll admit, the first thirty minutes of the film, I was actually liking it. It was starting to feel different, but later on the film continues the formula that Paranormal Activity 4 had.
Something is not right, let's keep recording, let's do really dumb stuff, stuff is getting serious, big scary face and that's the film. The film doesn't continue the Paranormal Activity storyline, it just a film cashing in on big horror franchise.
The characters in the film are really dumb, I mean something happens to this person and their first thought is to go to her house and touch everything. Basically they're incriminating themselves, but that's what's wrong with this film, nothing makes sense.
See what the first film did was that it was just a small film that took place mostly in a bedroom where we all sleep, and that can really creep us out. Now this film is trying to bigger and it rather has some action moments, comedic stuff rather than trying to creep you out.
The film also tries to incorporate a certain element where it tries to connect itself with the other films, but it ends up making the whole franchise a big mess. I'm not going to spoil the entire movie, but they incorporate time travel.
..That's right TIME TRAVEL. The film also at times feels like a Chronicle rip-off. A new location is some-what of fresh new air, but that's really it. Stuff happens to a certain character and does not question anything, he thinks it's so cool.
Don't get me wrong, there are some cool moments in this film, but overall Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is a prime example why horror films in January are bad. I don't recommend this film to anyone, and I'm not looking forward to Paranormal Activity 5 later this year.
